Common Diseases

Ich (White Spot Disease)

Symptoms:

  • White spots like salt grains on fish
  • Fish rubbing against objects
  • Rapid breathing

Treatment:

  • Raise temperature gradually to 86°F (30°C)
  • Use ich medication
  • Treat entire tank

Fin Rot

Symptoms:

  • Ragged, torn fins
  • Fins appearing melted
  • Black or red edges on fins

Treatment:

  • Improve water quality
  • Antibiotic medication
  • Remove affected fish to hospital tank

Swim Bladder Disease

Symptoms:

  • Fish floating uncontrollably
  • Difficulty swimming
  • Sinking or floating to surface

Treatment:

  • Fast fish for 2-3 days
  • Feed blanched pea
  • Improve water quality

Dropsy

Symptoms:

  • Swollen body
  • Scales sticking out (pinecone appearance)
  • Bulging eyes

Treatment:

  • Often fatal if advanced
  • Antibiotic treatment
  • Isolate affected fish

Prevention

  • Quarantine new fish
  • Maintain water quality
  • Avoid overfeeding
  • Keep appropriate temperature
  • Don’t overcrowd
